Make your own ornaments

December 26, 2011

I know it’s just past the holidays but this is a great idea not only for Christmas ornaments but you can make things for Valentine’s Day, Easter, Father’s Day and even Halloween.

Salt Dough – for ornaments/decorations

  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup salt
  • ½ cup water
  • Big bowl and spoon
  • Cookie cutters or kid safe plastic knife
  • Food coloring
  • Cookie sheet
  • Paints

Directions

–    Start by mixing together the flour, salt and water in a bowl.
–    If you plan on adding food coloring, add it now.
–    Start stirring with a spoon but as it stiffens you can use your hands. ( My son loved this part)
–    If a little to dry add water (tiny amounts at a time) or if too wet add more flour.

Shaping:

–    Now you can roll the dough using a rolling pin or just smooth with your hands to about ¼ inch slab. You can than use the cookie cutters on it.
–    I also just rolled it and made shapes like candy canes and even a large sign. Just make sure it is pretty thin so that it can dry well.

Bake and Decorate:

–    Place creations on cookie sheet and set oven on 250 degrees. Bake about 2 hours, flipping every 20 minutes so the edges don’t curl up.
–    Once cool you can paint or decorate further.

These are pretty strong once baked and look nice. You can have your children date and sign the back so you know by whom and when they were made.
